The Glorious Names of Christ (Christmas)

The Glorious Names of Christ
Isaiah 8:22 – 9:7 ESV
22 And they will look to the earth, but behold, distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish. And they will be thrust into thick darkness.
9:1 But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but in the latter time he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.  2  The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined. You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil. For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian. For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon  his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.   Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

This is one of the prophecies of the Birth of Christ in the Old Testament.
Micah 5:2   But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting.
Isaiah 7:14   a virgin shall conceive, have a son, call his name Immanuel   (600 yrs)
In our text…..another prophecy of the birth of a child…the birth of a son….and a description of his name….and what He would do …..bringing an end of earthly governments….He will establish His own government and bring PEACE…..AND KINGDOM FILLED WITH JUSTICE AND RIGHTEOUSNESS..

Christ must come……and bring another Kingdom because…..
     I.        A Failed Kingdom

(review the context)
The land of Galilee would be invaded by the Assyrians.   A time of gloom, darkness and utter hopelessness. (Isaiah 8:22;   9:1)
Zebulun …Naphtali….NW section of Galilee…first to be invaded by Assyrian army….(9:1)

·         Man has never had his own kingdom….that is successful in bringing peace….
Russian kingdom….Chinese Kingdom…..United Kingdom…American Kingdom… all the kingdoms of this world….have failed….failed to produce peace….failed to produce righteousness and justice…..
All the kingdoms of this world….can be described as …..kingdom of darkness ( a Failed Kingdom)

II.        A Future Kingdom   Isaiah 9:1-2 ( also see Matthew 4:13-16)
The prophet Isaiah…points to a future Kingdom…. God’s Kingdom….
A.   A Kingdom of Light! (v.2)
(see Matthew 4:13-16) -------Jesus came bringing the light of the gospel.

B.    A Kingdom of Joy!    (v.3)   (Romans 14:17)
For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
Find real joy in the Holy Spirit!     Not in what you have.   What you wear. Eat. Do.
C.   A Kingdom of Freedom!   (v.4)    (like Gidean defeating the Midianites…God will deliver them from their oppressors…… That’s what Jesus comes to do…deliver us from all that oppresses us…..Sin, the Devil, the World,   the flesh,
John 8:32
32 And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

D.   A Kingdom of Peace! (v.5)

The Christmas angels… the shepherds….bring glad tidings of great joy…peace on earth…

This is the Future Kingdom to come….but since the coming of Christ…..the kingdom can be experience in the heart…..one day….it will be experienced throughout the earth…
Acts 1:6    wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?    NOT YET!!!
But you can enjoy the KING!       You can know the KING personally!

 III.        A Glorious King     (v.6)
A.   Gloriously born !    “a child is born” His humanity.     To be our Savior required that Jesus come by way of birth…..Isaiah 7:14….born of a virgin…   Jesus’s Father was not Joseph, but ----the Holy Spirit……..God did not send angel….sent a perfect man…perfectly human… No sin….perfect Lamb of God.

B.    Gloriously given!    “a son is given” His deity.   God come in the flesh!
Isaiah 7:14   Immanuel “God with us”

 IV.        A Glorious Name    (v.6)
A.   Wonderful Counselor-     words go together
Christ is wonderful in His counsels to us. He is the Perfect Counselor. He has the answer to every problem.   He is the answer for a troubled life! Many people seek solutions in drugs, psychologist, talk-shows, fortune tellers and psychics.   Wonderful is our Lord Who gives wise counsel for every problem in life.
See Luke 4:32 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.
John 6:68   Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life.

B.    Mighty God
Jesus Christ not only gives wise and wonderful counsel, but He gives us power to act upon His Word. Many people will hear counsel, but fail to put what they hear into action.   Jesus has power to defeat sin, destroy Satan, snatch the lost from the road to Hell, raise the dead, heal the sick and answer prayer. With Jesus there is no energy crisis!   Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think—according to the power that works in you   (see Ephesians 3:20)
C.   Everlasting Father
Jesus is both a  Son and Father.   As Son he humbled himself and became the sacrifice for sins. As everlasting Father he provides everlasting life to all who receive Him and believe.   (see John 3:16)
To the fatherless there is hope in Christ who becomes for us an Everlasting Father.
D.   Prince of Peace – Jesus gives peace 3 ways:
(1) Between man and God (Romans 5:1)
(2)Peace in your heart (Philippians 4:6-7)
6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

(3)   Future Kingdom of Peace (Luke 2:14)    Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

Colossians 1:13 Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son:

“He is our peace” Ephesians 2:14
Men will never achieve peace in the world.   Peace treaties have been broken in every case, but Jesus who is the Prince of Peace will bring ultimate peace on earth.
******How can peace be yours?******
See Isaiah 9:6 “for unto us….unto us…”
It’s not for everybody.    It is unto “US” who believe. Jesus is not Wonderful Counselor to everyone.
Jesus is not Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace to everyone.   But He is “unto us” who believe in Him.      See Acts 4:12
   V.        A Glorious Kingdom    -   Isaiah 9:7
God’s Kingdom will never end. The Lord will perform it.    Will you be ready?   Jesus said in Matthew 4:17
Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
