5 Reason to Preach God’s Word---- Part 1

2Timothy 3:1 -  4:4          (audio - part 1)

2 Timothy 3English Standard Version (ESV)

Godlessness in the Last Days

3 But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having the appearance of godliness, but denying its power. Avoid such people. For among them are those who creep into households and capture weak women, burdened with sins and led astray by various passions, always learning and never able to arrive at a knowledge of the truth. Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, men corrupted in mind and disqualified regarding the faith. But they will not get very far, for their folly will be plain to all, as was that of those two men.

All Scripture Is Breathed Out by God

10 You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted, 13 while evil people and impostors will go on from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived. 14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed, knowing from whom you learned it 15 and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.

4 I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

Key verse -  4:2   Preach the word

Amos 8:11

“Behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord God,
“when I will send a famine on the land—
not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water,
but of hearing the words of the Lord.

I believe we are in the days described by the prophet Amos.  There is a famine of hearing the words of the Lord.  People are starving, but they don’t know why they are starving.   People live with  huge emptiness in their hearts, and they don’t realize the seriousness of life without the WORDS of the Lord.  Our society has been fed a diet of empty words,  religious substitutes, but what’s needed is the clear teaching of God’s holy Word.

God’s People are failing to remember this important truth that

man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. (Deut 8:3)

This is a command from God.    It’s a mandate from Heaven that we preach only God’s Word.  We don’t receive our command from the culture, and from what’s  considered politically correct.    Today,  it’s not politically correct to preach the Word of God.     It’s popular and acceptable to give some mushy talk, some feel good- pep-talk and sprinkle a few Bible verses  just as long as you stay off certain topics.  Don’t say anything that offends people who want to live immoral.

v.2  Preach the word –

be ready in season and out of season -    all the time.

Negative aspect -  reprove/rebuke  (confront sin,  confront heresy,  confront false teaching,  )

Positive aspect -  exhort,  with complete patience and teaching…  encourage Christians to live godly lives;  and to learn and follow sound doctrine;   our goal is to lead a group of Christians to be God-centered,   gospel-centered,  Christ-exalting,  and Spirit-led

Look at several reasons  WHY WE MUST PREACH GOD’S WORD…

1.    Because of the danger of the times   3:1   “times of difficulty”      “dangerous times”    “perilous times”

When?     “in the last days”        someone said “I believe we are in the ‘last days’”     Truth is we’ve been in the last days for a long time….   When Jesus came the first time…that began the “last days”………Hebrews 1:2-3   Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son

1John 2:18    it is the last hour

We are in the closing hour of the last days;    and I believe we are down to minutes….

3:1   times of difficulty…    difficult times      “dangerous times”

For the last 2000 years… it has been,  and continues to be “dangerous times” for the church.  There have been evil forces,  and there continues to be evil forces  at work to threaten the very existence of the church of the Lord Jesus.    Evil is at work to destroy the work of the gospel;    to destroy the truth ….  God’s people are threaten on  a greater scale today, like never before.

And it continues to get worse.     SEE  v.13   “bad to worse”

From the time the church was born   up  til now…   it has gotten from bad to worse for the existence of the church……

First 400 years of the church……….persecution  (and really that hasn’t completely left the true church)……  Foxe’s Book of Martyrs …. Gives a history of Christians,  Christian leaders, pastors, missionaries….persecuted….  crucifixion… fed to hungry lions…. Burned at the stake and  beheaded

In the 4th century…the Roman Emperor  Constantine…claimed to have gotten religion….claims to become a Christian…and the persecution stops….  What came out of that =   the church compromised and married up with the Rome…  (Rome controlled the known world..)   From that unholy union came  Roman Catholism… …and the church world was submerged in sacramentalism  where salvation was by ritual,    rather than a personal relationship with Christ;  salvation was taught to be by works, not by grace;   ….there was a protest …..the protestant movement, the reformation led by courageous  reformers  brought the church out of the darkness …but the foothold of Rome is still present today  and continues to lead people away from the simplicity of the Gospel of Christ…

As Western countries became more industrialized,  and there was the discovery of new things;  exploration brought  people to the New World—to America--…..  and soon we became so smart; that we began to believe we didn’t need God;      Charles Darwin writes a book  The Origin of the Species, and all the major colleges and universities …today  hold to the position of EVOLUTION…

With God out of the picture….  We explain away the need for GOD….   We have evolved from the ancient, out-dated myths of Genesis,  we have arrived…..  In the 1960’s the US Supreme Court declared it unconstitutional to have prayer and bible reading in  the public schools….  The public schools use to belong to God fearing people who were leaders at the local level.   That changed…it is not controlled by liberals who deny Christ, and deny the authority of God’s Word.

In the 1990’s Mysticism invaded the church….. truth was no longer important;     doctrine was no longer important;      truth is whatever you want it to be;     ministry used to be centered around truth of God’s Word….that changed…. …truth was kicked out the back door….and the spirit of pragmatism invaded the church  which is  “whatever works   do it…”      you do surveys….find out what people want,  and then build ministry on what people want,   truth becomes the servant of whatever works….

It is difficult times -   look at  vv.2-4       these are   DANGEROUS PEOPLE….   they have invaded the church…see v.5      and if you confront them as being in error---   you will get blasted

v.6    creep into households….      Television,  the media,  social media--  pushes the agenda of Satan…….   Capture weak women--    women are to be protected by strong men leadership;  but it’s NOT politically correct to do that today;    the feminist movement has done much harm in our country,  and it has also invaded the church….     To teach biblical manhood;  and biblical womanhood is absolutely NOT politically correct,  and most church won’t touch it with a 10ft pole.

v.7 always learning…………knowledge of the truth

Jannes ..  Jambres    (Egyptian magicians)  opposed Moses

That’s why  it’s imperative…. Absolutely  CRITICAL       preach the Word of God…

2.    Because of the Saints We Follow……..vv.10-14   we must not let them down

Timothy  follows  Paul

v.10   My teaching,  my conduct,  my aim in life,  my faith,  my patience,  my love,  my steadfastness

v.11  my persecutions and sufferings   v.12 all who desire to live a godly life…

v.14  But as for you…continue  in what you have …….

We follow others who have preached the WORD….  A previous generation  that champion the cause of Christ,  and the ministry of the Gospel of Christ….  WE MUST stay true… carry the torch…run the race that is set before us….  They are counting on us…to carry it on….   Don’t forget the main thing… that is to PREACH God’s Word…
