A Preview of the Cross
Luke 18:31-34 click here for audio
31 And taking the twelve, he said to them, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written about the Son of Man by the prophets will be accomplished. 32 For he will be delivered over to the Gentiles and will be mocked and shamefully treated and spit upon. 33 And after flogging him, they will kill him, and on the third day he will rise.” 34 But they understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they did not grasp what was said.
17 And as Jesus was going up to Jerusalem, he took the twelve disciples aside, and on the way he said to them, 18 “See, we are going up to Jerusalem. And the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death 19 and deliver him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified, and he will be raised on the third day.”
32 And they were on the road, going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking ahead of them. And they were amazed, and those who followed were afraid. And taking the twelve again, he began to tell them what was to happen to him, 33 saying, “See, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the scribes, and they will condemn him to death and deliver him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock him and spit on him, and flog him and kill him. And after three days he will rise.”
The Apostle Paul before he was the Apostle Paul was Saul of Tarsus with an outstandinging track record of spiritual acheivements. But all of that changed when He met Christ. That which he gloried in changed. That which he boasted about changed. Paul said this -
But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. Galatians 6:14
His boast was in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ. At the cross he found the only One worth honoring and glorying in; The world turned it’s back on Paul at the cross; and Paul forsook all the achievements and attractions of the world for Christ. The cross of Christ is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to those who are being saved it is the power of God. 1Cor. 1:18
In our text Jesus tells his disciples the purpose for which he came. He came to die on the cross. He came to be the Perfect Sacrifice for our sins.
He is the LAMB SLAIN FROM THE FOUNDATION OF THE WORLD. Rev. 13:8
There are Bible scoffers, unbelievers--- highly critical of Jesus who say things like Jesus had a dream for a better world, but things did not go the way He intended….the whole ending was a nightmare…..His interaction with the Jewish leaders went too far…..and he got himself killed.
THAT’S HOW THEY EXPLAIN THE CRUCIFIXION….
Jesus gives a preview of what’s about to take place. His arrest, His sufferings, His death, and His rising from the dead. It’s like He’s saying “don’t be surprised, don’t be shocked…it’s going to happen…”
This is NOT the FIRST TIME HE SPOKE OF THIS…
LUKE 5:34-35 “…….when the bridegroom is taken away from them…” FIRST preview of what’s about to take place given in LUKE’s GOSPEL…
Luke 12:50 “ I have a baptism to be baptized with…how great is my distress until it is accomplished..”
Luke 13:31-35 “get away from here, for Herod….kill you….tell that fox… “Behold, I cast out demons….”
Luke 17:25 “But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation…”
THERE ARE 3 TIMES……VERY CLEAR….VERY DETAILED (straightforward) IN HIS DESCRIPTION
(1) Luke 9:21-22
(2) Luke 9:44-45---------------these 3 very straightforward (Matthew / Mark..)
(3) Luke 18:31-34
See Luke 9:51 “he set his face to go to Jerusalem…” at this point..months away
1. The Direction for All to go and see
Jerusalem - It’s in Jerusalem -- this is the place where it takes place….
When they eventually arrive (Jesus & Disciples)..it’s Passover…. It will be crowded with Jewish worshippers…. Bringing their lambs …for the annual Passover event…….has it’s roots in Exodus 12 the Passover Lamb was killed and eaten….blood applied to the doorpost of the Jewish people…when the Angel of DEATH ….God says…when I see the blood I will pass over you… the firstborn of every home…that did not have the blood applied to the doorpost of the home…would DIE…
The disciples saw the reason to go…Passover…they were reluctant to go…because there was growing hostility toward Jesus…death threats made on Jesus…..they had hope to see Jesus become the King….and set up his kingdom……..they clearly saw and embraced this……NOT a CROSS
One day “ And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband…”
ONE DAY….it will be the place of cornation of the Sovereign King, the Lord Jesus Christ…
But before there’s a heavenly cornation…..
There’s a horrific crucifixion…. Before there’s the crown; there’s the cross !
It’s the DIRECTION FOR ALL TO GO AND SEE …… In Jerusalem … there’s the CROSS….for all to see and consider…..
Like the Apostle Paul…. We Glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ; or like the unbelieving world we cringed and think of it as foolishness…
Going up - v.31 “see, we are going up…” they are currently near Jericho…. They are down toward the DEAD SEA area…. Which is by the way ….the lowest point on EARTH…. From now on they are going up….the elevation is going to be a steep climb… as a footnote…I don’t really think the topography is by accident….it’s an elevated city…..city on a hill…. The cross will be lifted with our Savior… “If I be lifted up, I will draw all men to me….” All eyes are drawn to that high place…
Napoleaon - it’s said…. He conquered much of the world…. And he was speaking to someone as they were looking at a map of the world….each nation had a color…. Napoleaon put his finger on Great Britain…a red spot….It it wasn’t for that red spot, I would have conquered the world…
Someone suggested Satan could say the same thing…. He put his finger on Jerusalem…on the cross, if it wasn’t for that red, bloody cross, I would have conquered the world…
2. The Documents for all to go and read
v.31 “everything that is written about the Son of Man………accomplished..”
It’s amazing that the Jews did not SEE in the SCRIPTURES the reference to the Messiah being the Suffering and Crucified Messiah
· Adam & Eve - sin- Genesis 3:15 promise of a coming Savior…. God killed an animal to cover their nakedness…. Leaves inadequate…. Sacrifice made to cover them… PICTURE
· Cain & Abel - got accepted Abel’s sacrifice…. Not Cain…
· Abraham & Isaac - Genesis 22 God to Abraham to take his son Isaac to Mount Moriah ….offer him…. ….Heb. 11 Abraham knew God could raise him from the dead……..Isaac said…here’s the wood, the fire, where’s the lamb? God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.”..
Much of the literature written by Jewish scholars….. they write of the Messiah….but nothing is said about a crucified Messiah….
The prophets gave written documentation in the Scriptures of His Sufferings, Death and Resurrection…
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories.
See Psalms 22
See Isaiah 53
Zechariah 11:12-13 So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of the Lord, to the potter
Zechariah 13:7 “Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me,” declares the Lord of hosts. “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered;
I will turn my hand against the little ones.
Psalms 69:21 for my thirst they gave me sour wine to drink.
Zechariah 12:10 when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced,
The suffering, death, and resurrection of Christ was not incidental….it was predicted….
It was the predetermined plan of God…ACTS 2:22 .22 “Men of Israel, hear these words: Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— 23 this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men.
Jesus knew the minute details of what was to take place…. CONSIDER THE PARALLEL PASSAGES……..PUT IT ALL TOGETHER…
1- Matthew 20:18 - delivered over to the chief priests and scribes……they will condemn……..their religious rulers…..
2- Deliver over to Gentiles (Romans)…. The Jews did not practice the death penalty by crucifixion….only ROME could authorize crucifixion…. They did not crucify their own Roman citizens…except for those guilty of leading an insurrection against their government…This makes the prophecy in Zechariah more interesting…. “being pierced” … not something they did……they executed by stoning….
3- They will mock him….. robe on him….blindfold him…hit him in the head…. MARK says “they will spit on him” most humilitating act….to be spit on….
4- FLOGGED - scourge - using a whip….at the end would be thongs…attached bits of bone, metal…… Deut 25:3 NOT to be given more than 40 lashes across the back……. The Jews gave 39 just to be sure not to exceed 40; give 3 sets of 13 lashes…. The victim strap to a pole…pulled up…extended….and give 3 sets of 13 lashes…..rotate 3 positions from the victims side…his back…and other side….3 different men used…to each set of 13 lashes were strong…
NO Wonder….SIMON OF CYRENE….was made to carry our Lord’s cross…..too weak after the beating……. Many were known to die after the flogging….
5- Killed--- crucifixion………….nailed to the cross…… died due to not getting air by pushing up on the cross beam to get air…. To speed up death the Roman soldiers would break their legs to prevent them from pushing up…..
Jesus already died…..
John 19:36 For these things happened so that the Scripture would be fulfilled: Not one of His bones will be broken. (Psalms 34:20)
6 - third day he will RISE
Psalms 16:10 For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption.
3. The Confused Disciples v.34
3 times it says they did not “get this”
1. They understood none of these things
2. This saying was hidden from them
3. They did not grasp what was said
Saying the same thing…..they did not “get it” ….they are in the dark…. Could not grasp this…
Why? They had no way of tying in what he said with what they believe…… what he said did not fit into their way of thinking… they had no category to put what he said …. It did not fit in their imagination…
After the resurrection---
25 And he said to them, “O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Was it not necessary that the Christ should suffer these things and enter into his glory?” 27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.
What about you? Do you see the Lord’s sufferings, His death, His crucifixion, and His resurrection from the dead….as something impossible to understand?
Or do you see yourself as a wretched sinner in need of forgiveness?
