Who is Jesus?
Sermon preached at Swan Creek Baptist Church – 11/6/16 - Pastor Chris Gowen
Luke 19:28-40 click here for audio
28 And when he had said these things, he went on ahead, going up to Jerusalem. 29 When he drew near to Bethphage and Bethany, at the mount that is called Olivet, he sent two of the disciples, 30 saying, “Go into the village in front of you, where on entering you will find a colt tied, on which no one has ever yet sat. Untie it and bring it here. 31 If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ you shall say this: ‘The Lord has need of it.’” 32 So those who were sent went away and found it just as he had told them. 33 And as they were untying the colt, its owners said to them, “Why are you untying the colt?” 34 And they said, “The Lord has need of it.” 35 And they brought it to Jesus, and throwing their cloaks on the colt, they set Jesus on it. 36 And as he rode along, they spread their cloaks on the road. 37 As he was drawing near—already on the way down the Mount of Olives—the whole multitude of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works that they had seen, 38 saying, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” 39 And some of the Pharisees in the crowd said to him, “Teacher, rebuke your disciples.” 40 He answered, “I tell you, if these were silent, the very stones would cry out.”
Matthew 21:1-9 Mark 11:1-10 John 12:12-15
The Grand Entry to Jerusalem
We know all about making a grand entry into a place. For example at the local high school basketball game, or football game, and the home team makes their grand entry on to the field, or court. There’s cheers, applause and much commotion for the team. It’s a grand entry when the bride makes her entrance in the wedding procession, the father proudly escorts her down the aisle. There’s music, flowers, candles, and elegant pageantry. I would say it was a grand entrance yesterday for Mrs Sharpe who was brought to her 80th birthday celebration.
Today, we are looking at a grand entrance ……a triumphal entry….as it’s commonly called…of the Lord Jesus…. probably more accurately called “a humble entrance”….he rides into Jerusalem on a donkey. (read the passage)
The focus is on Jesus. He had performed many miracles. Yet not everyone was convinced as to WHO JESUS IS.
At this point in the text it had been 2 weeks since Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead. And a few days ago gave sight to Bartimaeus and another blind man…. Large crowds are coming. They hear Jesus is in town. He has come to Bethany….the home of Lazarus, Mary and Martha.
John 12 - some Greeks came asking Philip “we wish to see Jesus”……it was a huge crowd because people were attending the annual Passover event in Jerusalem…..but Jesus everyone has heard of……they wanted to see him…..and they wanted to see Lazarus who was raised from the dead……….the GREEKS who wanted to see Jesus were from Galilee…..they asked Philip….and Philip told Andrew; they both went to Jesus…
23 And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified. 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit
Who is this Son of Man? Who is this Jesus?
1. The One Who Knows (Jesus knew His future….He knew all things..He knew all people)
2. The One Who Commands (since He is God…he has the right/authority to command)
3. The One Who fulfills - fulfillment of prophecy.
Who is this Jesus?
I. The One Who KNOWS
a. His purpose. “the hour has come……” He knew his mission (19:10)
That’s why it says in v.28 “and when he had said…..”
Going to Jerusalem was not a spur of the moment decision. See Luke 9:51 “he set his face to go to Jerusalem….”
It’s always been the plan….. (see v.28) “when he had said…..” told a parable to drive home the point as to why he has come… (v.10 …Son of man came to seek……)
He had been in Jericho….Dead Sea…… (two blind men……Zaccheus… healing / salvation) He was accompanied by large crowds (Zacch …tree)….. in the crowd were Jews making their way to Jerusalem for Passover…. Many in crowd…were following Jesus anticipating the arrival of the kingdom….. see 19:11 “they supposed that the kingdom of God was to appear immediately…..”
Jesus had already told his disciples repeatedly of his purpose….. he told them…. Arrested, mocked, shamefully treated and spit upon…..see 18:31-34….) could not grasp what he was saying…
The trip from Jericho to Jerusalem….. up….. “going up to Jerusalem.” About 17 miles. And it’s a steep climb…. The elevation difference is quite a bit…several thousand feet difference…. Jericho (850 ft below sea level; Jerusalem 2500 ft above sea level..) For 17miles… the climb is steep…. V.28 “going up…”
v.29 Bethphage Bethany
About 2 miles SE of Jerusalem at the descent of the Mount of Olives… “mount that is called Olivet” Bethphage and Bethany ….. Bethphage…no nothing about…the name means “house of figs” Bethany (means “house of dates”…a fruit grow on palm trees) and the home town of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus…. 2 weeks ago (in the chronology of where we are in the text) Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead….today the town is still there but it is not called Bethany…there is another name in Arabic and it means “Lazarus”.
Who is this Jesus? (the One Who Knows….. His purpose…..)
b. All things. V.29c “sent two…..”
v.30 where on entering (other Gospels say “immediately” )
Matt 21 donkey and a colt (foal) brought both of them….. Jesus would ride the colt (no one has ever sat)
READ vv. 30-34 just as Jesus had said…..
He knew exactly where the donkey and her colt would be tied….
He knew what the reaction of the owner would be; and what he would say… “why are you untying..”
He knew what the owner would says, how he would react….
HOW? Jesus is omniscient…..a trait that is only for God…. The Jehovah Witness don’t believe Jesus is God in the flesh. Only God knows all things. Jesus knows all things… When he met Zaccheus… Jesus didn’t look up in the tree…. Hey there young man…what’s your name? He called him by name.
Nathaniel - John 1:47
“Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom there is no deceit!” 48 Nathanael said to him, “How do you know me?” Jesus answered him, “Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.” 49 Nathanael answered him, “Rabbi, you are the Son of God! You are the King of Israel!”
Peter - go to the lake ….. throw out line ….. Matthew 17:27….first fish….shekel……
Who is this Jesus? One who KNOWS….. His Purpose; ….knows all things….
II.The Lord Who COMMANDS
a. Our Service…. V.31
The Lord could have said to Judas Iscariot who held the money bag….let’s have what money we have and go and buy a donkey. We won’t borrow someone’s donkey, we’ll get our own… we’ll buy it and then resale it…. or let’s just rent one….
There’s a reason why they didn’t buy one; or rent one….. The Lord already owned it.
10 For every beast of the forest is mine,
the cattle on a thousand hills.
11 I know all the birds of the hills,
and all that moves in the field is mine.
The owner (better word is steward) who had the donkey ….gladly released the donkey and colt for the Lord’s use…..someone might think…why both ?? maybe for the colt to cooperate and be at ease..they bring the donkey along as well…..I don’t know…..maybe it would be better to keep it with it’s Moma…….not a question that has bothered me…
All I know… the Lord has need of it
What is it that God has placed into your hands for His service?
The Lord has need of it.
Shamgar had an oxgoad, David had a sling,
Dorcas had a needle, Rahab had some string,
Samson had a jawbone, Aaron had a rod,
Mary had some ointment, and they all were used of God.
There’s a great message - here “the Lord has need of it..”
As Passover week continues….there will be Simon of Cyrene…he will be needed to carry the Lord’s cross……
Someone had to make the nails….someone had to make the beams for the cross…..someone had to make the spear….that pierced the Lord…..Joseph / Nicodemis services were needed to carry his body to the tomb…
Joseph of Arimathea….his tomb will be borrowed for a few days and nights
Paul….for me to live is Christ….. his life…his heart,….his mind….his entire being…instrument…a vessel for the Lord’s service…
We are His church…. We are his voice as we speak His Word to others…. We are his hands that perform acts of service… Our feet belong to Christ as we make mission trips to share the gospel with others.
Our voice belongs to Christ…as we are used to lift up praise to God; and lift up prayers to Heaven.
vv.35-36 Who is Jesus? He commands… our service… our submission
B. our submission. The symbolism…. A king would ride through town…and people would show respect, honor by throwing their outer coat,…garment…in his pathway….as the horse would trample upon it…. act of submission….under his feet…..
8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Phil. 2:8-11
C. our worship. Vv.37-38
Matthew 14:32 (Jesus walking on the water…..Peter…sinking…why did you doubt)
32 And when they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”
Matthew 28:17 And when they saw him they worshiped him, but some doubted
THAT TELLS YOU - Who Jesus is? He’s God. Only God is to be worshipped. That’s one of the 10 commandments….Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Worship only God. If Jesus was not God in the flesh…then…when people gave him worship….he would have said…oops, you all are going too far….stop this….
Who is Jesus? The One Who knows (purpose/all things) commands (service, submission, worship)
III. One who Fulfills
A. Past prophecy
Matthew 21:1-9 v.9 “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”
Psalm 118: 25-26 25 Save us, we pray, O Lord!
O Lord, we pray, give us success! 26 Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
We bless you from the house of the Lord..
Zech 9:9………………………….500 years before the event….
9 Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion!
Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem!
Behold, your king is coming to you;
righteous and having salvation is he,
humble and mounted on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
As Jesus rides the donkey into Jerusalem - He comes as the Lamb of God…
He comes humble…. Fulfills the types in the O.T….. the sacrifices…all the lambs were only pictures, illustrations POINTING to the true Lamb of God. John the Baptist…the last prophet in the Old Covenant points to Jesus… “Behold, the Lamb of God… Jn 1:29
Exodus 12…..In the O.T. Mosaic requirement…..Jews select a lamb on the 10th day of the 1st month; keep the lamb in their home until the 14th day of the month…..sacrificed on the 14th day….. …. Here it is..on the 10th day of the month—select their lamb….keep it up…. (family pet)…. 14th day…sacrificed..
Corresponding to this….
Saturday – John 12- Jesus spends time in Bethany…. Anointed….
Sunday - John 12:9 a great crowd comes to Bethany…
Monday – enters Jerusalem - Palm Monday------the Presentation of the Lamb (10th day/mo)
Returns to Bethany for the night
Tuesday -from Bethany to Jerusalem, curses a fig tree; cleanses the Temple; religious leaders angry, want to kill him; goes back to Bethany
Wednesday – returns to Jerusalem….long day of controversy with relig leaders… Olivet discourse – Matt. 24; mark 13; Luke 21..tells of his coming death, Judas makes plans to betray
Thursday - meets with disciples – upper room - Passover meal… gives final message to disciples; goes to Garden of Gethsea… prays to the Heavenly Father
Friday - arrested, tried and crucified------ the 14th day………..
Saturday – grave
Sunday -rises from the dead
The One who fulfills ………….not just all the past prophecies…… all future…
B. Future prophecy Vv.39-40
51 And behold, the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. And the earth shook, and the rocks were split. 52 The tombs also were opened. And many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised, 53 and coming out of the tombs after his resurrection they went into the holy city and appeared to many. 54 When the centurion and those who were with him, keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and what took place, they were filled with awe and said, “Truly this was the Son[i] of God!”
And Jesus will fulfill the future prophecy He gives of Himself..
He will come again… John 14 I go to prepare a place…. I will come again….
I pray you are ready. Do you know Who Jesus is?
