The Death that Ends All Deaths

When You young folks turn 33, it ought to cause you to seriously think about something.
I will be turning 33 very soon ......... OKAY...I’ll get it straight that was 10 years ago for me,....But I do remember at the age of 33, at least there was this thought that came to my mind........AGE that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ died on the Cross.

When biographers write the biography of their subjects, they don’t spend much time
talking about their deaths. WHY? The biographer doesn’t want to bore you the reader. According to an Irish writer, George Bernard Shaw, who did an extensive study on the subject of death came to this conclusion..”One out of one people dies.” Even if you notice the obtituaries in the local papers....more time is given to what the person did in his lifetime, who his/her relative are, the accomplishments, etc. Very little is said about his death other than the date, age, and perhaps the cause of death.

Look up in an Encyclopedia on the life of a famous person. More information is given
on their life rather than their death. Biographers don’t spend much time on the death of their subject....the rule is broken, however, when you come to the death of Jesus. In the four Gospels (which is a biography of Jesus) about 1/3 of the Gospel writing is devoted to the death of Jesus.

Jesus was different in his birth from any human being.......BORN OF A VIRGIN.
Jesus was different in his life from any human being....ABSOLUTELY SINLESS.
Jesus was different in his death from any human being born to live.....BORN TO DIE.

The great preacher, Dr. R.G. Lee, put it like this:
“His death prearranged, prophesied, and provided by God, was no afterthought. Jesus was born with the shadow of the cross upon
Him. With the shadow of the cross upon His heart, He learned to walk, He learned to talk, and He learned to work. From His earliest moment upon this earth it was His burden by day, His pallet by night.”

Normally, people are remembered by something they accomplished by their life...
George Washington.........1st president of U.S. Benjamin Franklin............discovered electricity
Thomas Edison.................invented the light bulb
Neil Armstrong.................first man on moon
Walt Disney......................creation of Mickey Mouse
According to Bible, the most significant thing Jesus ever did was to die. Now, 2000yrs
after Jesus left this earth...there is one symbol, one universal symbol of the Christian Faith....It is not a cradle, it is not a crown, IT IS A CROSS!!!! THE CROSS IS GOD’S NEON SIGN TELLING US THAT THE WAY TO A PERSONAL RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD IS THROUGH A PLACE CALLED CALVARY!

In IPeter 3:18..........see 3 very important truths abouth that death.....(The death that Ends all Death)
I. IT WAS A SACRIFICIAL DEATH FOR SIN

“for Christ also suffered once for sins” v.18
“He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself” Hebrews 9:26

No one can understand the death of Jesus until they understand its relationship to sin.

A) JESUS DEATH was different......because of its cause 4 ways of dying execution (legally & illegally)/suicide/ accidental/ natural causes........these explain the HOW....not the WHY BIBLE....why of death........because of sin.
1st Adam was born to live, not to die. God made it clear. “If you eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, you will surely die.” Adam/Eve did eat, and they did die.

Spirit died instantly, their physical bodies subject to decay, deterioration...death.
Ever since Adam....death comes to all.
Romans 5:12 “therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death
through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned.”

.......all who sin..die......So, all people die, because all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
sin is the only cause of death.....

RAISES A QUESTION..........Jesus was sinless (never committed a sin, not even once)
since sin is the only cause of death, He should not have died. Yet, Jesus did die. He
ought not to have died, because He was innocent of any crime; He was mocked, flogged, stripped, tortured, and nailed to a cross, left to hang there until He was dead. Why?

Jesus died a voluntary death. Only one in History. Some folks give their lives in
rescuing people, or in battle, but they only chose to die sooner than later. Eventually
death will come to them anyway. “It is appointed unto man once to die.” DEATH IS
NOT AN OPTION. The last itme on the agenda of every life is death. Someone has said, “all the world is a hospital, and every person in it is a terminal patient.”

The Only person in the world, who voluntarily chose to die, who did not have to die, was the Lord Jesus Christ. JOHN 10:17,18 “I lay down my life that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself”

Ecc.8:8 “No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit, and no one has power in
the day of death.” When the time comes, you’re going to give up your spirit whether you like it or not. But the Bible says in Matthew 27:50 Jesus “yielded up his spirit.”
A SACRIFICAL DEATH.
a CHAPLAIN was going around speaking to soldier boys who had been wounded in
battle. He came to a soldier who was missing his right arm. Trying to comfort the man,
he said, “son, I just want you to know that you lost your arm fighting for a great cause.”
The soldier said, “Chaplain, you’re wrong, I didn’t lose my arm....I gave it.” Likewise,
Jesus did not lose His life..He gave it. He died a sacrificial death for sin.

II. It was a Substitutionary Death for Sinners.

....the just for the unjust...

If sin is the only cause of death...yet Jesus had no sin, but Jesus still died, then there can be only one cause of His death ... OUR SIN.

Jesus died on behalf of sinners. He took our place, and paid for our sins.

JESUS WAS OUR SUBSTITUTE! THIS IS DENIED BY INFIDELS, AND LIBERAL THEOLOGIANS ......
I want you to listen to what one liberal, unbelieving false teacher has said. He happens to be the president of a Baptist college in Georgia.....

“We have become far more consumed by what is known as the substitutionary theory of atonement...” In this analysis the focus shifts from satisfying the honor of God to meeting the penalties for sin. Sin brings death. Jesus serves as our “substitute” in paying the mortal penalties for sin. Assuming our guilt, Jesus accepts a punishment that he does not deserve. He is a stand-in for us in taking on sin’s dreadful consequences. (SO FAR I AGREE WITH HIM TOTALLY, BUT NOW LISTEN TO HIS CONCLUSION.)
The presence of Jesus is not an event that reconciles God to people...Atonement
is not something God has done for us in the sense that God has made Jesus take our place so that the books would be balanced....Jesus does not come to pay off the heavy penalties for our sin...Jesus did not have to die...Jesus did not die to satisfy some abstract penalty for sin....Jesus died because people chose to kill him.”
That is pure mockery of the cross and the crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Here what another liberal religious leader has said....He was the late Bishop G. Bromley
Oxnam, the president of the World Council of Churches....”I would rather go to hell than
go to heaven on the back of another man.” In other words, He did not need someone
else to get him to Heaven. If that was his belief....then hell is now his eternal home.

No one can go to heaven on the back of “good works”, No one can go to Heaven on the
back of a religious denomination, We go to Heaven by trusting in Jesus....We go to
Heaven on the back of Jesus...because it was His back who bore our sins, His back bore
our Cross, our Punishment. He was our Substitute!!!! The Bible is clear .........
Romans 5:8 “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” 2Cor 5:21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him”
IThess 5:9-10 “For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our
Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us.”
IPeter 2:24 “Jesus Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree”
IJohn 3:16 “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us”
Isaiah 53:5-6 “But He was wounded for our transgression, He was bruised for our
iniquities; the chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are
healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned, every one, to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on Him the iniquity of us all”

To say you earn your way into Heaven by living a good life, is to deny what Jesus did for us on the Cross...A WORKS salvation actually denies, disrespects, and discredits the death of Jesus Christ on the Cross of Calvary!!!!

Here is a test....we can give this test right to everyone....later on...you can give this test to a friend, or loved one who is not here....

QUESTION....If you died and were standing before God, and God ask you this
question ... Why should I allow You to enter into My Heaven? What would you say?
Suppose you said....I was baptized at the age of 10, or some other age...
Suppose you said....I went to church every opportunity, I read the Bible frequently...
Suppose you said....I tried to live a good life....
EVERYTHING YOU SAID....WAS SOMETHING YOU HAVE DONE...
The only correct answer is this .... ”Nothing in my hand I bring, simply to the cross, I cling, O Lamb of God, I come” I’m trusting only in what Jesus has done for me.

Saying anything else....means....you are trusting in personal works for salvation, rather than trusting in a personal Saviour!

A little old lady who was theologically ignorant, educationally illiterate, but she had a passionate love for Jesus Christ and the Word of God. An infidel ask her one time, “Can you even tell me what it feels like to be saved?" She thought for a moment and said, “Well, it feels to me as if the Lord stood in my shoes, and now I’m standing in His!”

So Far........we’ve said....The death of Jesus was a Sacrificial Death
a Substitutionary Death

3) It was a Sufficient Death for Salvation.
v.18 “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” Jesus died for the purpose of bringing us back to a right relationship with the God who created us.

NOTE CAREFULLY: It says, bring US to GOD.....Not...GOD to US....Why?
Because God did not leave us, WE LEFT GOD!!

bible says, Romans 3:11,12 “there is none who seeks after God. they have all turned
aside...”

Jesus brings us back to God..... It’s like you are floating down a raging river....down the river there only one thing waiting for you...it’s doom, disaster over the falls, into the rocks, and certain death....But someone lands in your little boat. and throws out a rope and lasso’s a huge stump on the bank of the river.....and pulls you to shore....The shore is not pulled to you, but you are moving toward the shore....Jesus lasso’s if you will the throne room of God’s shoreline....Through His death...He paid the price...and brought us to God’s shore...WE ARE BROUGHT SAFELY BACK TO GOD!

(1) The death of Our Lord is sufficient to bring us back to God not because God has moved from us, but we have moved from God.

the bible says, Isaiah 59:1,2 “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot
save; Nor His ear heavy, that it cannot hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God; And your sins have hidden His face from you, So that He will not hear.”

WE STAND IN NEED OF BEING BROUGHT BACK TO GOD....BECAUSE OUR SINS HAS MOVED US AWAY FROM GOD....

....ALSO....WE MUST BE DELIVERED FROM THE WRATH OF GOD

God is not only a God of love, but as unpopular as it is to teach it and unpleasant as it is to hear it, He is also a God of wrath. In fact, there are more references to the anger, fury, and wrath of God than there are to His love and tenderness.

Psalm 7:11 “God is a just judge, and God is angry with the wicked every day”
Romans 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.”

We have witnessed on the news of the forest fires in several western states. Thousands
and thousands of acres of forest have been destroyed by fires. They estimate that it will take perhaps several months before the fires are out. Dry conditions, and high winds are the reason for the raging fires. I can’t help but think of the eternal fires of Hell, and the outpouring of God’s wrath on a wicked world without Jesus. The winds of God’s wrath, and the dry, barren lost souls will forever burn in eternal fiery judgment. To deny that, would be to deny Holy Scriptures!

Thank God....no one has to face the wrath of God! Sufficient Plans have been made for
our survival! I think about this illustration.... a man was hundreds of miles in the middle of a prairie. All around him was dry grasslands. Wildfires are common....and on a prairie the man
saw on the horizon an approaching fire that stretch as far across the horizion as he could see. No one on foot has ever been known to outrun a sweeping prairie fire. The man took some matches....a burnt a huge, gigantic circle.....after the circle was complete burned out....the man stood in the very center of that burnt circle...the approaching fire...went around that burnt spot. He was saved. Jesus death on the cross was that burnt spot of God’s wrath. When we stand in that circle, we can know for certain that we will never be faced with the coming wrath of God.

Romans 8:1 “there is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus”

Jesus Christ took on the cross for you what you will have to take for all eternity, if you don’t take Jesus Christ.

The price Jesus paid was sufficient to pay for our sins, and to bring us back to God.

One time I bought some furniture at an auction...I really think I paid too much for it, but we needed it...someone was bidding against me....the price went up and up....finally, the guy who was bidding against me stopped...the price was set...I bought the funiture. We were on the auction block...up for the highest bidder...Satan gave his bids, but Jesus kept on bidding ... he offered payment in holy, crimson, red blood....that was sufficient payment to redeem us.

Isaiah. 53:11 “He shall see the travail of His soul, and be satisfied” God’s holiness was satisfied. God’s justice was satisfied.

Thank God....the death of Jesus Christ was a SUFFICIENT DEATH!!!!!
It sufficiently satisfied God’s requirement!!!!

The Devil thought He had us, but He was no match for King Jesus!!!

the story is told about one of the greatest generals of all time....NAPOLEON...
It is said he was in a conference room with some of his generals. They were discussing
the world situation, the world was almost completely controlled by Napoleaon. He had
conquered all countries....except for one....In the conference room, Napoleon pointed to a map hanging on the wall...He Pointed to Great Britan...the one country Napoleon could not conquer...on the map it was painted red. Napoleon pointed to those British Islands and said these famous words, “Had it not been for that red spot, I would have conquered the world.” I want to say, Satan must have pointed to Calvary and said, “Had it not been for that red spot, I would have conquered the world.”

Satan did not conquer the world....BECAUSE OF THE CROSS!!!!
According to the Bible, the most significant thing Jesus ever did was to die. The universal symbol of the Christian faith is not a cradle, a crown, IT’S A CROSS!

His death was “the Death that Ends all Death.”

I. IT WAS A ________________________ DEATH
FOR SIN.
IPeter 3:18 “for Christ also suffered once for sins”
Hebrews 9:26 “He has appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself”
Romans 5:12 “therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned”
John 10:17,18 “I lay down my life that I may take it again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of myself”

II. IT WAS A _________DEATH FOR SINNERS.
v.18 “...the just for the unjust”
Romans 5:8 “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”
2Cor. 5:21 “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”
IThess. 5:9-10 “For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our
Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us.”
IJohn 3:16 “By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us”

III. IT WAS A ________DEATH FOR SALVATION.
V.18 “For Christ also suffered once for sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God”
Romans 3:11,12 “there is none who seeks after God, they have all turned aside...”
Isaiah 59:1,2 “Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save;...your sins have hidden His face from you..”
Psalm 7:11 “God is a just judge, and God is angry with the wicked every day.
Romans 1:18 “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men.”
Romans 8:1 “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus”
Isaiah 53:11 “He shall see the travail of His soul, and be satisfied”

Only the death of Jesus satisfies a Holy, Righteous, and Just God! Only the death of Jesus satisfies the payment for sins. In whose death are you trusting? Are you trusting in your own death, or in the death of Jesus?
